Non-Citizens, Felons on Probation Among 20 Charged in Florida Election Fraud Crackdown
State prosecutors say 16 lawful permanent residents and four convicted felons are accused of illegal ballots in the 2024 election cycle.
- On Thursday, Governor Ron DeSantis and Attorney General James Uthmeier announced charges against 20 individuals for voter fraud, including 16 noncitizens accused of falsely claiming U.S. citizenship and 4 convicted felons who allegedly voted while ineligible.
- The Florida Office of Election Crimes and Security, created in 2022, has now overseen more than 100 prosecutions since its establishment. This latest operation stems from referrals made by state election officials and county supervisors after database reviews flagged noncitizens on voter rolls.
- Each offense is a third-degree felony; most defendants face up to 10 years in prison if convicted, while two face up to 15 and 20 years respectively. Uthmeier confirmed that 12 of the 20 individuals have been taken into custody as of Thursday.
- During the press conference, DeSantis announced the new Association of State and Local Election Officials, to be led by Secretary of State Cord Byrd. The organization will train election officials nationwide on Florida's election integrity model.
- Former Justice Department lawyer David Becker questioned the timing, saying it was "odd" for government agencies to "bring these kinds of claims" weeks before the general election. Legal challenges to the Office of Statewide Prosecution's jurisdiction continue to complicate voter fraud cases.
