Florida Man Indicted in Planned Attack at Pro-Israel Organization in Plantation
Federal prosecutors say Forrest Kendall Pemberton faces life in prison after a grand jury indicted him on attempted hate crime and firearm charges.
- A federal grand jury indicted Gainesville resident Forrest Kendall Pemberton, 27, on Thursday for allegedly plotting a mass shooting at a Jewish nonprofit organization. Prosecutors allege Pemberton planned to target employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committe because they were Jewish.
- Authorities state Pemberton attempted to carry out the attack on Dec. 23, 2024, after writing a letter expressing "anti-authority sentiments." He traveled to the Plantation location, armed with an AR-15-style rifle, to "scout" the site.
- Following his apprehension, authorities recovered an AR-15, a Galil rifle, and a 9mm pistol from Pemberton's vehicle. Law enforcement tracked his movements using ATM withdrawals made along University Drive in Plantation.
- If convicted, Pemberton faces a maximum life sentence for the attempted hate crime. The firearm count carries a mandatory consecutive sentence of up to 30 years in prison, plus up to five years for short-barreled rifle possession.
- Pemberton told investigators he chose the organization for its "political influence" and expressed frustration with the "status quo." He admitted the weapons' purpose was "twofold," including potential criminal intent to harm individuals.
