Florida attempts to 'wake the beast up' following 4 losing seasons in 5 years
Sumrall inherits a 4-8 team and brings in two coordinators, while Florida adds Dave Caldwell and several transfers to speed the rebuild.
On Thursday, August 20, 2026, the Florida Gators hired new head coach Jon Sumrall to deliver a much-needed turnaround after four losing seasons in the past five years.
Florida has posted a mediocre 70-60 record in Southeastern Conference play since Tim Tebow left campus in 2009, with coaches Will Muschamp, Jim McElwain, Dan Mullen, and Billy Napier failing to win a league title.
To "wake the beast up," Sumrall hired Georgia Tech's Buster Faulkner on offense and Kentucky's Brad White on defense, while adding longtime NFL general manager Dave Caldwell to the staff.
"It ain't a matter of if we're going to win here. It's how fast," Sumrall said of the rebuild, which features standout running back Jadan Baugh as its foundation.
The Gators face a challenging schedule this season, featuring major games against Auburn on September 19, Ole Miss on September 26, Georgia on October 31, and Oklahoma on November 7.
