First Murdaugh Hearing Set for Retrial: Will He Appear? And What Will He Wear?
The hearing will begin scheduling for the retrial after the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned Murdaugh’s 2023 murder convictions over improper jury communication.
On June 29, Alex Murdaugh will appear at the Lexington County Judicial Center for a status and scheduling hearing, marking the first court proceeding since the South Carolina Supreme Court ordered a new trial in his double-murder case.
The South Carolina Supreme Court overturned Murdaugh's 2023 murder convictions in May, citing improper jury communication and tampering by former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill during his original trial.
South Carolina Chief Justice John Kittredge assigned Circuit Court Judge Debra R. McCaslin to oversee all future proceedings; the June 29 hearing will address scheduling, location, and evidence matters before trial.
While the South Carolina Office of the Attorney General announced it will "aggressively" retry the case, Murdaugh's defense team has filed motions seeking a change of venue and permission to wear civilian clothes during proceedings.
Murdaugh remains imprisoned, serving a 27-year sentence for nonviolent financial crimes, and faces an additional 40-year sentence for separate convictions while maintaining his innocence regarding the 2021 shooting deaths of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul.
