Big Bear Bald Eaglets Hatch as Jackie and Shadow's Family Grows by 2
The hatch followed a second clutch after ravens breached the pair’s first two eggs, and Friends of Big Bear Valley said the emergence came at 9:33 p.m.
Celebrity bald eagle couple Jackie and Shadow welcomed two eaglets near Big Bear Lake this weekend, with the first hatching Saturday night and the second emerging Sunday morning.
After losing their first clutch in late January when ravens raided the nest, Jackie and Shadow laid two replacement eggs in late February. The successful births mark a significant recovery for the pair.
FOBBV confirmed the second eaglet emerged just 12 hours after its sibling. Media manager Jenny Voisard noted the "arduous" process, with chicks taking up to 48 hours to fully emerge.
Local third graders will name the new eaglets through a future fundraiser, continuing a tradition that honored the late Sandy Steers, former executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley who died in February.
The eaglets typically fledge within 10 to 14 weeks, reaching three feet in size within two months. Observers can follow their progress via the live webcam until they depart the nest.
