Company owned by Trump donor won $1.7 million no-bid Reflecting Pool cleaning contract: Report
The Park Service bypassed competitive bidding and said the urgent work had to be finished before 250th birthday events, federal records show.
- On Thursday, The New York Times revealed the National Park Service awarded a $1.7 million no-bid contract to Greenwater Services for a Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool purification system that struggled as algae blooms and peeling paint emerged.
- To meet the deadline for the country's 250th birthday, the NPS bypassed competition by citing an emergency exemption, Interior Department spokeswoman Katie Martin said.
- Records show Greenwater Services is owned by J.J. Cafaro Investment Trust, led by John J. Cafaro, a Trump donor with prior convictions for bribery and campaign finance violations; the firm had received only one other federal contract.
- Interior Department officials stated they were unaware of Cafaro's political ties when selecting the firm, adding that "this company was selected because they had the expertise, work force and materials" to meet the timeline.
- Crews continue vacuuming algae and applying hydrogen peroxide while awaiting the permanent purification system, as satellite imagery confirms this year's bloom is the largest to occur in the last five years.
