The Government issued an Emergency Alert to mobile phones across England and Wales on Friday evening regarding extreme wildfire risks, sparking widespread confusion and triggering a surge in non-emergency 999 calls to North Wales Police.
In response to escalating wildfire threats, the Government implemented a temporary ban on disposable barbecues and deployed 100 additional military personnel to major incident areas. First Secretary Louise Haigh stated the measures reflect the seriousness of safeguarding properties.
Fire and Rescue services are battling multiple wildfires across Wales, including a major incident near Rhandirmwyn and Llandovery burning since Wednesday. Crews have evacuated homes in Torfaen, Porth, Merthyr Tydfil, and Blaenavon while attempting to contain the spreading blazes.
Welsh Labour leader Ken Skates criticized the Government response as "too slow," writing to the First Minister to request the Senedd be recalled. Jayne Bryant, Welsh Labour's spokesperson for Communities, said "leadership is lacking whilst Wales burns."
Authorities warn wildfire risks remain dangerously high during continued hot, dry conditions. Officials urge the public to avoid disposable barbecues, firepits, and fireworks, cautioning that "even a small flame can rapidly develop into a major wildfire" threatening lives and properties.
