Firefighters leave scene of Cairngorms wildfire after nearly five weeks
More than 500 firefighters tackled the blaze, which devastated an estimated 25 square kilometres and left some areas closed, officials said.
On Monday, August 17, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service concluded its wildfire response in Cairngorms National Park, handing management of the final affected area—RSPB Abernethy Nature Reserve—back to the RSPB.
The blaze began near Ryvoan Bothy on July 15, requiring more than 500 firefighters to combat flames that devastated an estimated 25 square kilometres of land.
Smoke from the fire reached as far as Aberdeen, around 60 miles away, while emergency evacuations of nearby homes and businesses occurred shortly after the blaze broke out in July.
While businesses across the area are reopening, RSPB teams continue to dampen down hotspots, with an RSPB spokesperson calling the handover an "important milestone".
Forestry and Land Scotland and the RSPB have warned that "some locations may remain hazardous due to unstable ground conditions and the risk of falling trees", urging public caution.
