1 Dead After Crash Involving Semitruck in Downtown Cincinnati
Smoke spread across downtown as crews shut down three major routes and diverted traffic while officials investigated the crash and fire.
On Sunday evening, a semi-truck crashed into a wall on Interstate 71 in downtown Cincinnati near the Lytle Tunnel at 6:51 p.m., resulting in a fire that killed the driver.
Cincinnati Fire Department firefighters responded to the scene, where heavy fire engulfed both the vehicle and trailer; Assistant Fire Chief Matt Flagler confirmed the driver was trapped and later died from injuries.
The crash occurred directly underneath the U.S. Route 50 overpass, causing minor beam damage, and a large amount of diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway during impact.
Ohio Department of Transportation officials diverted traffic to I-75 North to manage the scene, while police advised drivers to avoid downtown Cincinnati and utilize alternate routes during ongoing cleanup.
While the fire is extinguished, significant cleanup work remains before roads reopen; state officials are assessing structural damage to the overpass as the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
