Police say the fire was contained to one hallway and the school board is assessing damage before reopening.
On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, a fire at F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham sent one student to hospital with life-threatening injuries after emergency crews responded shortly after 8 a.m.

The student was airlifted by Ornge EMS to a trauma centre in stable but critical condition; the school board deployed its Tragic Events Response Support Team to assist students who witnessed the incident.
Senior staff confirmed Madill will remain closed for the rest of the week, with online learning for students commencing on Wednesday morning as officials assess fire damage.
