Fifth West Nile Virus Death Confirmed as Number of Cases Rises - DutchNews.nl

  • A fifth person has died from West Nile virus since the start of the year, while confirmed infections rose to 44. The public health agency RIVM detected 16 new patients in the past week.
  • Following a hospital patient's death in Utrecht, the RIVM confirmed last month that West Nile is now circulating in the Dutch mosquito population. Prior fatalities involved infections acquired while traveling abroad.
  • While 80% of infected people show no symptoms, West Nile fever causes neurological problems in around 1% of cases. The RIVM also recorded 136 positive tests in horses and 171 in birds this year.
  • Health authorities stress there is no pandemic risk because the virus cannot spread person-to-person. Specialists, including doctors, are monitoring the disease to determine if additional precautionary measures are necessary.
  • Around half of this year's infections occurred in Zuid-Holland province, with other cases across Noord-Holland, Noord-Brabant, Gelderland, Overijssel, and Utrecht. This geographic spread indicates endemic circulation throughout multiple regions.
