France vs Iraq Live: Potential Delays as Les Bleus Chase Knockout Qualification
Lightning could halt play and send fans to shelter if storms reach the stadium, organizers said, as winds, rain and tornadoes are forecast.
On Monday, the FIFA World Cup match between France and Iraq in Philadelphia faces potential disruption from severe storms. NBC10 First Alert Meteorologist Robert Johnson warns of strong winds, rain, and isolated tornadoes impacting the 5 p.m. start.
The NBC10 First Alert Weather Team is tracking severe storms expected by late afternoon, bringing heavy winds, hail, and lightning that could force officials to stall the contest.
Under FIFA rules, if lightning strikes within eight miles of the stadium, play stops and fans must evacuate to emergency shelters. Lauren Lambrugo, chief operating officer of Philadelphia Soccer, stated officials must wait 30 minutes before resuming.
Fans cannot bring umbrellas into the Linc, though ponchos are allowed. France supporter Joe Linkhorn of Cleveland said the weather would be fun, while Iraq fan Akeel Almusawi of Dearborn, Michigan, noted wet conditions could benefit his team.
Despite potential disruptions, officials stated, "They will make sure that the match is broadcast and played tomorrow." Weather challenges were a recurring problem during the FIFA Club World Cup last year, requiring similar contingency planning.
