Google-Backed Fervo Energy Achieves First Power at up to 900MW Cape Station Geothermal Plant in Utah
The milestone validates enhanced geothermal systems as a 24/7 power source, with 900 MW of contracted output and more than 4 GW planned.
On Thursday, Fervo Energy achieved First Power at Cape Station in Beaver County, Utah, marking the world's first utility-scale Enhanced Geothermal Systems project to export electricity to the grid.
Utilizing horizontal drilling techniques adapted from the oil and gas industry, Fervo drills wells 8,000 feet below the surface to fracture rock and heat water to 190 degrees Celsius for 24/7 carbon-free power generation.
Comprising three 33-megawatt GeoBlocks, this initial 100-megawatt phase supports 900 megawatts of fully contracted capacity, enough to power the equivalent of nearly 1 million U.S. homes annually.
A second 400-megawatt phase is under construction with a projected commercial operations date in 2028, while major beneficiary Google supports the project's expansion toward multi-gigawatt capacity.
As artificial intelligence infrastructure drives electricity demand, CEO Tim Latimer described the milestone as "the defining new power generation technology of our time," positioning EGS as critical to meeting urgent clean power needs.
