Feds issue detain order on Taiwan-made bike products over forced labor
- On September 24, U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued a withhold release order to hold bicycles, parts, and accessories imported from Giant Manufacturing Co. Ltd., a Taiwanese company.
- The order followed an investigation that uncovered evidence of forced labor, including exploitative work and housing conditions, coercive debt practices, wage suppression, and prolonged overtime hours.
- Established in 1972, Giant is the largest bicycle manufacturer globally, generating sales exceeding $2.3 billion in the previous year. The company indicated that only products made in Taiwan would face shipment disruptions and anticipated short-term delays as it implements contingency plans.
- CBP Commissioner Rodney S. Scott highlighted that the agency has a strong history of taking action against businesses involved in forced labor that negatively impact compliant U.S. companies, and noted that any U.S. individual or organization can report suspected cases by calling 1-800-BE-ALERT.
- The order demonstrates ongoing U.S. efforts to block goods made with forced labor amid tested Taiwan-U.S. trade relations and continuing tariff negotiations.
