Feds Probe Smith College Over Transgender Admissions Policy
The complaint says Smith’s policy gives trans women access to dorms, bathrooms and athletic teams, raising questions under Title IX’s single-sex exception.
On Monday, the US Department of Education launched a Title IX investigation into Smith College, an all-women's liberal arts college in Massachusetts, for admitting transgender women.
Defending Education, a conservative nonprofit, filed the civil rights complaint prompting the probe, while Smith adapted its admissions policies in 2015 to include transgender and nonbinary applicants.
Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey stated that "an all-women's college loses all meaning if it is admitting biological males," citing Title IX's single-sex exception.
Smith College said it is "fully committed to its institutional mission and values, including compliance with civil rights laws" but declined to comment on the pending investigation.
Shannon Minter, an attorney with the National Center for LGBTQ Rights, called the investigation an "ominous" example of government overreach, arguing the administration is weaponizing anti-discrimination laws.
