U.S. Department of Justice Monitoring Polls at 4 Michigan Cities, Agency Says
Monitors will observe polling sites for compliance with federal voting-rights laws and will not administer elections or handle ballots, officials said.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Justice deployed federal monitors to polling sites in Detroit, Hamtramck, Lansing, and East Lansing to "ensure free and fair elections nationwide," according to Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon.
While the agency describes the deployment as "routine," 10 Democratic senators wrote to the Justice Department on Monday seeking assurances that observers will not "target jurisdictions in a partisan manner" or interfere with state and local election officials.
Federal officials selected 15 jurisdictions across six states, including Michigan, for monitoring during the 2026 primary season; nearly 1.2 million ballots have already been returned statewide ahead of voting.
Responding to the deployment, Detroit NAACP President the Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony stated, "We are observing the observers to make sure that your vote is secure and you are able to vote."
Broader concerns persist regarding the Trump administration's potential influence on election conduct, as critics note these monitors coincide with efforts to obtain state voter rolls ahead of November's midterm elections.
