FDA Recalls Popular Shredded Cheese Brands Sold in 31 States, Including Florida
More than 1.5 million bags of shredded cheese from Great Lakes Cheese Co. were recalled in 31 states due to metal fragment contamination posing internal injury risks, FDA said.
- On Oct. 3, Great Lakes Cheese Co. initiated a voluntary recall for shredded cheese after metal fragments were found, and the FDA reclassified it as a Class II recall on Dec. 1, covering 31 states and Puerto Rico including Florida.
- The FDA traced the contamination to supplier raw materials, describing the incident as a downstream recall tied to metal fragments earlier in the supply chain.
- Federal filings show 263,575 cases are recalled, including 235,789 low-moisture part-skim mozzarella cases, and Great Lakes Cheese Co. recalled over 250,000 cases with between 4 and 12 bags each.
- The U.S. Food & Drug Administration urges consumers not to eat recalled shredded cheese and to throw it away or return it to retailers for a refund, contacting 1-888-INFO-FDA with questions.
- Packages range from 8-ounce bags to 5-pound packs with sell-by dates into March 2026, including dozens of private-label and national brands sold at Aldi, Target, Walmart, Publix, and Sprouts.
