FDA Upgrades Egg Recall Linked to Salmonella to Highest Health Risk Level
The FDA says the recall could cause serious illness or death as the outbreak has led to 345 infections and 36 hospitalizations, CDC data show.
- On Wednesday, the FDA upgraded the recall of nearly 1.6 million cartons of eggs to "Class I," its highest risk level, warning consumers that exposure could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
- Midwest Poultry Services, based in North Manchester, Indiana, initiated the recall in July after determining that 1,589,577 cartons of eggs produced in Texas between June 6 and July 3 "have the potential to be contaminated."
- Since late July, the CDC has documented a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak resulting in 345 reported infections and 36 hospitalizations across 27 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
- Recalled eggs were distributed to Kroger and Brookshire Grocery stores across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Midwest Poultry Services urged consumers to return products for a refund.
- The FDA explained the classification should not be viewed "as an expansion or change" to the initial recall, while symptoms of Salmonella Enteritidis include fever, vomiting, and diarrhea beginning six hours to six days after exposure.
