2 men facing federal charges after nearly 1.6K pounds of meth found inside blackberry shipments
Two convicted felons face federal charges after authorities seized 1,585 pounds of methamphetamine worth tens of millions hidden in blackberry shipments, officials said.
- On Nov. 21, authorities seized almost 1,600 pounds of methamphetamine hidden inside pallets of blackberries shipped from Mexico to North Georgia, charging Gerardo Solorio-Alvarado, 44, and Nelsonen Enrique Sorto, 36.
- Following surveillance of refrigerated trucks at a Fulton County cold storage warehouse, investigators say the origin of the shipments has not been specified by officials, and they followed vehicles to arrest sites.
- A search found about 924 pounds of methamphetamine in blackberry pallets at a southeast Atlanta home, and after a narcotics K-9 alerted, agents recovered about 661 pounds from an abandoned truck.
- Two convicted felons were arrested, face federal charges, and remain in state custody pending transfer to the U.S. Marshals Service; prosecutors say they face possible life sentences and seek detention without bond by a federal magistrate judge.
- GBI and FBI leaders warned that this largest Hall County meth seizure, worth tens of millions, signals a firm stance: 'drug trafficking serves no place in the state of Georgia,' Hosey said.
