Three Teens in Custody After 17-Year-Old Killed While Waiting for School Bus
Authorities say a brief altercation preceded the killing, and three suspects have been taken into custody as investigators continue the case.
On Wednesday morning, 17-year-old Gaffney High School student Jomiltron Sentell Fair Jr. was fatally shot near a school bus stop on West Rutledge Avenue, Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler confirmed.
Following a manhunt, Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller confirmed three suspects are in custody: 17-year-old Reginald Louis Barnes Jr., 18-year-old Keveon Ken'Dre Covington, and a 16-year-old detained in Spartanburg County.
In bond court Thursday, Solicitor Barry Barnette reported investigators found two guns and evidence of five shots fired; the judge denied bond for Barnes, who is being charged as an adult.
Family members and community residents established a memorial at the bus stop, with a candlelight vigil scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Granard Courts Apartments. "All he was trying to do was make it to Gaffney High School," said grandmother Tangie Roseboro.
Counseling resources remain available to the 15 students who witnessed the incident, according to Cherokee County School District Superintendent Raashad Fitzpatrick, while Gaffney Police Chief Gerald Knight increased patrols at local schools.
