Facing financial pressure, Iowa State will offer alcohol sales at football and basketball games
Athletic director Jamie Pollard said the change will add beer, wine and ready-to-drink cocktails, with proceeds supporting student wellness and public safety programs.
On June 22, 2026, Athletic Director Jamie Pollard announced that Iowa State will sell alcohol at Jack Trice Stadium and Hilton Coliseum starting in the 2026-27 school year for guests 21 and older.
Citing "uncertainty and significant financial pressures from rapidly increasing costs," Pollard noted that Iowa State is not immune to financial strain and must identify new revenue streams to offset systemic challenges.
Beer, wine, and pre-packaged ready-to-drink cocktails will be offered, with sales limited to two alcoholic beverages per person per transaction and requiring legal identification at purchase.
Iowa State will prohibit fans from re-entering Jack Trice Stadium during games to accommodate the new sales, while revenue will support alcohol education, student wellness programming, and public safety enhancements.
Pollard stated, "Many of our peers have successfully taken this step." Sales begin at Jack Trice Stadium this fall and Hilton Coliseum this winter, positioning Iowa State among peer institutions adopting similar policies.
