A66 crash: Police name five people killed in Middlesbrough collision after car pursuit
The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the collision that killed seven people, including two officers, after a car drove the wrong way, police said.
Cleveland Police released the names of five people who died in the A66 crash on Saturday, when their Volkswagen Passat collided with a marked police vehicle, bringing the total death toll to seven.
Following a pursuit of a suspicious vehicle, the Independent Office for Police Conduct stated police 'sighted a suspicious vehicle and a pursuit began' before the Passat travelled the wrong way down the A66.
PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, were killed in the crash; both armed response officers typically require a 'significant policing career,' according to reports.
The IOPC has launched an investigation into the crash circumstances, while members of the public have begun leaving floral tributes at the scene on the A66.
Cleveland Police Commissioner Matt Storey described the force as a 'really tight-knit family,' noting the incident 'will have a big impact on them' as leadership supports the victims' families.
