"The FIA needs to step in" - Russell's cooling vest comments explained
George Russell retired from the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia on Sunday after a power unit failure struck five laps from the finish, ending his podium bid. The British driver was running in a strong third position when his Mercedes ground to a halt.
After surging to second from seventh on the grid, Russell battled Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli before a second safety car deployed for Alex Albon's stranded Williams. The caution set up a thrilling final sprint before the mechanical failure struck.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff described the race as one of his "worst experiences," citing the power unit failure and lost constructor points. Wolff added, "We had such an advantage two safety cars, you couldn't be more unlucky."
With Ferraris Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finishing third and fourth, Mercedes maintains its constructors' lead at 151 points. Russell's championship deficit to rival Antonelli has grown to 84 points after his third retirement of the season.
"You've almost got to laugh, it's beyond disappointment," Russell said after his third technical DNF this season. Despite the setback, the Briton stated he will "keep on fighting" for the remaining races.
