Expert debunks ‘gut hacks’ trending on social media
Dr. Tim Spector says most cleanse trends lack evidence and urges people to support gut health with fiber-rich plant foods and fewer ultra-processed foods.
Gut-Health expert Tim Spector is debunking trending 'gut hacks' after actor Matt Damon attributed his weight loss for 'The Odyssey' to a three-month gut cleanse.
Social media influencers are promoting 'gut hacks' to treat bloating, fatigue and digestive issues, though Tim warns these cleanses often contain harsh laxatives and can cause harm.
Regarding water temperature, Tim stated there is no evidence that hot water 'cleanses' the body, though coffee contains polyphenols that interact with gut microbes.
Colonic irrigation carries risks including dehydration, infection and bowel damage, while PREDICT research shows feeding microbes diverse plants matters more than flushing.
To support gut health, Tim recommends aiming for around 30 different plants a week and cutting back on ultra-processed foods instead of elaborate protocols.
