Trump's powerful but unofficial Venezuela adviser leaves his role: Report
He said he was acting as a private citizen, while sources said concerns over his influence and business ties pushed him aside.
On July 31, Mauricio Claver-Carone told Reuters he is no longer overseeing President Trump's Venezuela portfolio, ending his influential role as an unofficial adviser to the administration.
Operating as an unofficial adviser, Claver-Carone wielded significant influence over multibillion-dollar deals, including securing a more than $150 million contract for Centerview Partners to restructure $200 billion of Venezuela's debt without competitive bidding.
Former ambassador Richard Grenell spoke to Trump in early July about Claver-Carone's heavy-handed involvement in business dealings in Caracas, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
While Claver-Carone described his exit as voluntary, multiple sources say he was forced out in recent weeks as an inter-agency team led by Secretary Marco Rubio assumed control of the Venezuela file.
The United States maintains a domineering role in Venezuela's energy sector while refraining from pushing substantial political reforms, with Rubio's inter-agency team continuing to implement Trump's policy.
