- Last Friday, President Donald Trump announced his intention to pardon Hernández and pardoned him hours later after Hernández sought clemency months ago via a petition and wrote to Trump on Oct. 28, while allies including Roger Stone lobbied for him.
- A U.S. judge last year sentenced Juan Orlando Hernández to a 45-year prison sentence and imposed an $8 million fine after convicting him of moving about 400 tons of cocaine.
- Both Republican and Democratic members of Congress criticized the pardon as undermining U.S. anti-drug efforts, and Sen. Bill Cassidy, Louisiana Republican, asked, `Why would we pardon this guy and then go after Maduro for running drugs into the United States?`
- The pardon arrived days before Honduras's presidential election, amid U.S. aid threats and an endorsement for National Party candidate Nasry Asfura; Hernández is in an undisclosed location for his safety, Ana García confirmed.
