Even deepest depths of ocean can’t escape human garbage

Researchers found mostly plastic debris, including wrappers and a boot, in 10 of 17 dives, showing the deep sea is not immune to pollution.

  • An international team led by Daniel Lauretta of Argentina's Natural Science Museum discovered 29 pieces of manmade litter in the Mar del Plata Submarine Canyon, 180 miles off the coast of Argentina.
  • Researchers used the ROV SuBastian to survey the seafloor across 10 of 17 dives, documenting debris at depths of more than two miles showing even remote ocean areas are not immune to pollution.
  • Plastic bags, food wrappers, and a rubber boot were identified in the debris. Lauretta said, 'The vast majority were plastic, along with a few rubber items,' with some trapped in rocks or drifting.
  • The team observed animals interacting with the waste, finding crustaceans had transient interactions while stationary creatures attached to partially subsumed plastic packaging and fishing ropes.
  • Scientists documented around 40 species that may be new to science during the mission. Lauretta added, 'Unveiling a species previously unknown to science in the endless darkness of the deep sea may be one of the most extraordinary experiences.
