Europol, Switzerland, Germany Authorities Seize $1.51B Bitcoin Laundering Service Cryptomixer
- Between November 24 and November 28, Swiss and German police dismantled Cryptomixer in Zurich with support from Europol and Eurojust, seizing three servers and the cryptomixer.io domain.
- Europol described how Cryptomixer operated as a hybrid clear‑web and dark‑web mixing service; it facilitated laundering of more than 1.3 billion euros in bitcoin since 2016 for ransomware groups, underground economy forums and dark web markets.
- Authorities seized more than 25 million euros in bitcoin and over 12 terabytes of data; investigators said Cryptomixer used long settlement windows and randomized distribution patterns to obscure proceeds from drug trafficking, weapons sales, ransomware attacks and payment-card fraud.
- Removing the platform and its infrastructure hinders criminals' ability to convert tainted crypto into fiat, while seized data and infrastructure could fuel investigations and prosecutions, Europol said.
- This action continues a series of global enforcement moves targeting crypto mixers and their operators, including Europol's March 2023 ChipMixer takedown with four servers, 7 TB of data, and $46.5 million seized, plus recent Samourai Wallet prosecutions laundering over $237 million.
