Cyber Threats Are Routine at Work Across the EU, but Preparedness Remains Patchy
Phishing remained the top threat, even as 60% of workers said they received cybersecurity training in the past year.
- A new Eurobarometer report of more than 25,000 EU-wide workers reveals three in four employees encountered suspicious emails or links at work. Phishing remained the primary threat over the past six months, followed by data theft and malware.
- Younger employees aged 15 to 24 reported the highest exposure, with 81pc encountering suspicious messages, compared to 54pc of those aged 50 and over. This persists despite 60pc of workers receiving cybersecurity training in the past year.
- While 72pc of workers feel confident spotting suspicious emails, only 48pc identify AI-generated fake videos. The survey reveals a "clear gap between awareness and everyday practice," with 15pc of incidents involving AI-generated scams.
- Among more than 1,000 Ireland-based workers, 61pc believe cybersecurity is important, surpassing the 53pc EU-wide average. Furthermore, 57pc of Irish staff fear "very serious" consequences if their company suffers an attack.
- Across the EU-wide region, Spain, Luxembourg, and France reported the highest exposure to cyber threats. Although most employees recognize risky behavior, the report notes that basic cyber hygiene is not yet systematic for all staff.
