Brussels is weighing emergency stock releases and temporary exemptions as fuel prices surge and airlines cancel flights, officials said.
- On Friday, the EU Aviation Safety Agency is due to publish recommendations on allowing US-produced Jet fuel, currently prohibited in Europe due to technical differences from the standard Jet A-1 type.
- The US-Israeli war with Iran and closure of the Strait of Hormuz have sent aviation fuel prices soaring; about 20 per cent of kerosene consumed in Europe previously transited through the Strait.
- EU energy commissioner Dan Jorgensen said Tuesday that Brussels is preparing for possible "security of supply issues," while the commission is establishing a "fuel observatory" to track production and stock levels.
- European legislation requires countries to hold oil stocks equivalent to 90 days of net imports and 61 days of domestic consumption; some airlines are pushing for temporary exemptions this summer.
- Aviation specialist Matteo Mirolo told AFP that states must invest in alternative SAF fuels, stating, "We do have to think about supply, especially as this will not be the last crisis we face.
