EU Secures Relief: 15% Tariff Ceiling on US Pharmaceuticals
The EU’s deal limits U.S. tariffs on its pharmaceutical exports to 15%, preventing the 100% tariffs announced by President Trump, securing trade stability for the sector.
- On Friday, the European Union and Japan said they secured a 15% tariff ceiling on U.S. pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and lumber under the end-July trade deal.
- On Thursday, Trump posted on Truth Social that a 100% tariff applies to branded or patented drugs unless firms build a U.S. manufacturing plant.
- There will be no tariff if construction has started, and Swiss company Roche recently broke ground on a U.S. unit while Swiss rival Novartis made a large U.S. pledge earlier this year.
- The European Commission said the United States intends to promptly keep pharmaceutical tariffs below 15%, while Dublin remains cautious and Ireland's deputy prime minister Simon Harris said they will study the impact.
- Negotiations meanwhile continue as the US reduced EU cars duties from 27.5% to 15%, while 50% tariffs on EU steel and aluminium remain.
