EU-Mercosur trade deal faces bumpy ride to finish line
- France publicly rejected the pact as drafted, with Roland Lescure saying, `As it stands, the treaty is simply not acceptable`, while European nations prepare votes between December 16 and 19.
- Facing farmer opposition, France demands three conditions: robust and effective safeguard clauses, equal production standards for EU farmers and import controls, while farmers say the pact risks unfair competition.
- The deal would unite a market of 722 million people, and France is discussing allowing Chinese inspectors to visit its livestock farms and slaughterhouses.
- The European Parliament votes Tuesday on safeguards to reassure farmers, and Lescure said France will not accept the agreement until assurances on three points are obtained.
- Lescure's comments complicate Ursula von der Leyen's upcoming trip to Brazil, a key visit for finalising the pact with Mercosur members Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay.

France requested a delay to a scheduled EU vote this week on the free-trade agreement with Mercosur countries—Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay—mainly due to insufficient protections for European agriculture.
The free trade agreement between the countries of South America and the EU, denounced by the trade unions and most of the political class, is due to take another step next week.
The French government criticises the Mercosur agreement, also because of the pressure of farmers. According to the current situation, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu does not want to agree.
