Hungary has decided to attract only Euro5.4 billion under the EU SAFE defence programme instead of the previously announced Euro16 billion. Unused funds can be reallocated between EU countries.
Under the previous administration, the country was originally allocated €16 billion.
Considering the carrying capacity of the economy, we are requesting a much smaller amount.
On Thursday, the Hungarian press reported that the new government would not apply for the EU defense loan at all, but the Commission's briefing on Friday confirmed that the Tisza government would still draw on the preferential loan, but would only request one-third of the original loan.
The new cabinet is spending less than a third of the SAFE budget requested by the Orbán government on strengthening Hungary's defense capabilities.
