Every EU citizen throws away tens of kilograms of food per year, as a new statistics show, whereas action is to be taken - at European and national level.
"In total, the European Union generated 57.9 million tonnes of food waste, including edible and non-edible parts, representing a slight increase of 0.7% over 2023 (57.5 million tonnes)", says Eurostat.
In 2024, the highest level of domestic food waste generation in the European Union was found in Portugal and Italy, where per capita food was more than 100 kg. 69 kg of food waste was on average in the households of EU countries. The European Union continues to face one of its biggest, yet often overlooked, problems: food waste. According to the latest Eurostat data, member states generated a total of 58.2 million tonnes of food waste in 2023. This equates to an average of 130 kilograms per person, including both edible and inedible parts.
