EU Chief to Visit Greenland in September to Boost Ties

The European Commission plans to expand support for Greenland, with direct EU funding proposed at more than $600 million under the next budget.

  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Greenland on August 30-31 to sign a joint declaration between the European Union and the Arctic island, meeting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
  • President Donald Trump spent late 2025 and early 2026 pressing for American control of the territory of 57,000 people, citing national security, while threatening tariffs on European allies over a Danish-led NATO exercise.
  • Brussels proposed doubling direct support to Greenland to more than $600 million for 2028-2034. European Council President António Costa and Leyen stated the European Union stands "in full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland."
  • Denmark expanded its military presence on the island by sending conscripts to Greenland in early August. The European Union maintains an office in Nuuk opened in 2024 as Arctic security remains a key priority.
  • "This visit underscores Europe's commitment to the Arctic, to its security and cooperation-- a key priority for the European Union." The European Commission plans to publish a revised Arctic strategy by end of year.
