Households account for more than half of all food waste in EU, official figures show
Every EU citizen throws away tens of kilograms of food per year, as a new statistics show, whereas action is to be taken - at European and national level.
"In total, the European Union generated 57.9 million tonnes of food waste, including edible and non-edible parts, representing a slight increase of 0.7% over 2023 (57.5 million tonnes)", says Eurostat.
In 2024, the highest level of domestic food waste generation in the European Union was found in Portugal and Italy, where per capita food was more than 100 kg. 69 kg of food waste was on average in the households of EU countries.
