Ethiopian Airlines to Buy 10 777 Freighters From Boeing
The order gives Ethiopian Airlines an option for eight more 777-8Fs as it seeks to expand cargo capacity before the new jet enters service.
On Wednesday in Addis Ababa, Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew and Boeing Senior Vice President Brad McMullen finalized an agreement for eight 777-8 freighters and two 777 freighters, valued at about $5 billion.
This purchase supports Ethiopian Airlines' strategy to strengthen its role as a global logistics gateway, as the carrier currently operates more than 140 aircraft including 12 777F cargo planes.
Growth remains strong, with the airline generating $9.1 billion in revenue in the financial year ending July 7, 2026, a 20% increase; cargo volumes rose 16% to 897,000 metric tonnes while passenger numbers increased 10% to 20.7 million.
The Federal Aviation Administration recently granted Boeing an exemption from fuel-efficiency limits starting in 2028, enabling the manufacturer to sell 35 additional 777F freighters through 2031.
Meanwhile, Ethiopian Airlines is helping finance a $12.5 billion airport project near Addis Ababa, which officials say will become Africa's largest airport, though the 777-8F is not expected to enter service until around 2029.
The Ethiopian company has placed a firm order of eight new generation Boeing 777-8F and two current 777F.
