Attempted murder, kidnapping and torture, recruitment of children into crime, drug smuggling and serious weapons crimes. These are some of the crimes behind the prisoners that Sweden tried to send to Estonia. But after Expressen's revelation about how more than half were stopped, the Swedish Prison and Probation Service is now classifying all information about new Estonian prisoners.
Sweden entered into an agreement with the Baltic State in June 2025 to transfer several hundred prisoners there, a measure aimed at curbing prison overcrowding in the Nordic country, which is far from unanimous in Estonia, where the profile of prisoners is being debated.
Estonia Rejects Majority of Swedish Prisoners
Estonia has rejected more than half of the Swedish prisoners initially proposed for transfer to a prison in Tartu, citing links to organized crime and concerns about radicalization.
