South Africa: Load Shedding At Bay, Profits Up - Eskom Announces R23.9bn Profit Before Tax

Eskom posted a R16 billion profit after tax for FY2025, cutting load shedding to just 13 days and reducing energy not supplied by over 96%, officials said.

  • On Tuesday, Eskom presented results for the year ended 31 March 2025, reporting an after-tax profit of R16-billion and a before-tax profit of R23.9 billion, its first return to profitability in eight years.
  • Eskom attributed the turnaround to a 12.74% standard tariff increase, a 14% primary energy cost reduction, year-on-year diesel savings of R16.3 billion, and fuel levy rebates from SARS.
  • Eskom said it supplied electricity on 96% of days, with load-shedding reduced to 13 days and 175 hours, and EBITDA margin rising to 29.05%.
  • Eskom said it will reinvest profits and invest more than R320-billion over five years, despite a qualified external audit opinion and municipal arrear debt of R94.6 billion.
  • Eskom is exploring prepaid supply models and distribution agency agreements, targets R50-billion in cost cuts by 2029 and R112-billion over five years, citing a 70% electricity availability factor.
