Federal Agencies to Collaborate to ‘Strengthen’ Review of Glyphosate
The agencies said the new working group will feed research into EPA’s review of glyphosate, which is expected to finish in early 2027.
- On Wednesday, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Health and Human Services announced a joint technical working group to coordinate research for EPA's ongoing registration review of glyphosate.
- Following a 2022 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling, the EPA must apply "further consideration" to evidence after the court found the agency's 2020 assessment used "inconsistent reasoning" in evaluating glyphosate's health risks.
- HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the collaboration advances the "Make America Healthy Again" agenda by bringing HHS scientific resources to "answer unresolved questions" regarding toxicology, occupational exposure, and dietary exposure.
- Bayer, which owns Monsanto and sells Roundup, maintains its glyphosate products have been "tested extensively" and "approved by regulators," while agencies clarified the agreement does not "predetermine or direct the outcome" of the review.
- The EPA expects to complete its updated human health risk assessment in early 2027, and officials plan to post working-group materials on a rolling basis in the public docket for transparency.
