Emotional farewell for police constable Mia Lay after Sydney crash
Hundreds of mourners and police officers honored the 20-year-old constable, who was posthumously awarded the National Police Service Medal.
On Wednesday, hundreds of mourners gathered at St Andrew's Cathedral in Sydney to farewell NSW Police Constable Mia Lay, the 20-year-old officer killed in a patrol car crash last month.
Lay had served with NSW Police for only 16 months when her patrol car crashed into a tree in Redfern on September 25 while responding to a reported car theft.
Partner Daniel Vasquez described the officer as the "love of my life," while Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon praised her "grit and bravery" and "exceptional promise" during her brief career.
Commissioner Lanyon announced Constable Lay was posthumously awarded the national police service medal and the NSW Police Force medal for ethical and diligent service, followed by a processional march along Bathurst Street.
In 2027, Constable Lay's name will be added to the National Police Memorial in Canberra, where 832 touchstones represent police lives lost since 1803, and to the NSW Police Wall of Remembrance.
