Emma Raducanu Avoided Hefty Fine During Press Conference Announcing Italian Open Exit
Emma Raducanu withdrew from the Italian Open on Tuesday, citing post-viral illness in the latest setback of a disrupted season. The 23-year-old British player had been scheduled to compete later this week.
Persistent health issues have sidelined Raducanu since her third-round exit at Indian Wells on March 8. She previously withdrew from Miami, Linz, Madrid, and the Billie Jean King Cup qualifier against Australia after contracting a virus in February.
The 23-year-old is yet to play a clay-court match this season with the French Open beginning May 24. Raducanu reached the fourth round in Rome 12 months ago before losing to Coco Gauff.
Her withdrawal is a blow to the Italian Open, which features all of the WTA top 20 competing. The tournament serves as the final WTA 1000 event before Roland-Garros begins.
In the men's draw, Jannik Sinner pursues the career Golden Masters in Rome, seeking his first title at this level. The 24-year-old aims to replicate Novak Djokovic's achievement of winning all nine Masters titles.
Emma Raducanu, 23, is suffering from a mysterious viral illness. She withdrew from yet another tournament at short notice. Now questions are being raised about her future.
