Former Institute of Peace board members ask court to stop addition of Trump name to headquarters
The agency says the move would make the name change permanent after Trump’s name was bolted to the building last December.
- On Thursday, the United States Institute of Peace filed an emergency motion asking a federal court to block "plans to carve President Trump's name into the facade of the iconic USIP headquarters building."
- Last December, the State Department renamed the USIP "to reflect the greatest dealmaker in our nation's history," following President Trump's February 2025 executive order to dismantle the agency.
- Citing the Kennedy Center as a precedent, lawyers for the agency stated the administration is "unsatisfied with the relative impermanence of external lettering" and has "taken steps to prepare to carve" the name.
- While the agency maintains the building is "symbolic of USIP's independent mission," a Pew Research Center poll released in May found only 9 percent of Americans support Trump naming government buildings after himself.
- Politico legal reporter Kyle Cheney noted that it is "NOT JUST THE KENNEDY CENTER" fighting off Trump's name, signaling a broader pattern of landmark disputes during his second term.
