The small number of women directors competing at the Venice Mostra had provoked an outcry: the president of the Maggie Gyllenhaal jury decided on Saturday to reward one of them, May el-Toukhy, for "Woman Unknown" on the fate of a woman in Denmark in the immediate post-war period.
The jury chaired by actress Maggie Gyllenhaal also awarded John Malkovich, possibly Love of Lee Chang-dong and the Israeli duo of NAZA, the most applauded prize.
