Ely, Minn., to Dedicate Memorial for Miners
Two granite tablets list the names, ages and death dates of 218 miners killed in Ely’s seven iron ore mines.
On Sunday, June 14, Ely will dedicate the Ely Miners Memorial at the Pioneer Mine, honoring more than 200 miners who died working in the city's seven iron ore mines.
Tracking down names, ages, and dates of death for the 218 men proved difficult, as immigrant spelling often changed upon arrival in the U.S., Seraphine Rolando of the Ely Arts and Heritage Center said.
The approximately $50,000 project features two granite tablets etched with victim names, death dates, and ages, funded through private donations, the city of Ely, and the Minnesota Department of Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation.
"We're trying to recognize the struggle that these immigrants had," said Rolando, noting the memorial serves as a reminder that Ely was largely created for and funded by the mines.
Although it has been almost 60 years since a mine operated in Ely, Nick Wognum, president of the Ely Arts and Heritage Center, said future phases could include adding statues to help visitors visualize underground work.
