ECI Announces Rajya Sabha Polls for UP, Uttarakhand, WB; MLC Elections in Four States
The polls will fill 11 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand and a West Bengal vacancy after a TMC resignation.
- On Tuesday, the Election Commission of India announced biennial elections for 11 Rajya Sabha seats, with voting scheduled for October 16 across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
- Ten seats in Uttar Pradesh and one in Uttarakhand will fall vacant in November upon the retirement of sitting members, including Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Arun Singh, Brijlal, Verma, Ram Gopal Yadav, and Naresh Bansal.
- The ECI also announced separate biennial elections for 28 Legislative Council seats across Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh, with polling set for October 23 and the Model Code of Conduct in force immediately.
- Simultaneously, the Commission announced a by-election for a single casual vacancy in the Upper House from West Bengal, which arose following the resignation of TMC MP Rukmini Mallik.
- Notifications for both Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council polls will be issued on September 29, establishing October 6 as the deadline for filing nominations and October 7 for scrutiny of papers.
