Eglinton Crosstown to begin service on Sunday, 15 years after construction on LRT began
- On Feb. 3, 2026, Mandeep Lali, TTC CEO, announced the Eglinton Crosstown LRT will start a phased opening Feb. 8 with fare-free rides on the first day, the TTC said.
- Construction began 15 years ago, and the 19-kilometre, 25-station Eglinton Crosstown LRT between Mount Dennis Station and Kennedy Station reached substantial completion after costs topped over $13 billion.
- TTC and Metrolinx testing showed no unaddressed safety-critical concerns, with more than 1,000 staff taking part in a major Jan. 22 test despite recent emergency-brake activations, officials said.
- Commuters can expect faster trips as train travel time will be 55 to 59 minutes versus 105 minutes by bus, with TTC buses covering off-hours and no parallel shuttles during service.
- Recent testing quirks have raised concern, with around 260 deficiencies and minor emergency-brake activations discussed with Metrolinx, critics warn risks similar to Finch West LRT.
