Osaka holds her nerve to reach US Open third round
On Thursday, Naomi Osaka defeated Katerina Siniakova 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, advancing to the third round of the U.S. Open.
Osaka dominated the opening set in 30 minutes with four unforced errors, but her form dropped sharply in the second as she committed 20 unforced errors, allowing Siniakova to force a decider.
Frustrated after losing the second set, the 28-year-old Osaka took a bathroom break before the third set to regroup, a decision she credited with helping her regain control.
Regaining her composure, the 13th-seed raced to a 3-0 lead in the final set and won more than 90% of first-serve points to close out the match 6-1.
Osaka now faces Belgian Elise Mertens in the next round, who defeated Maria Timofeeva 6-2, 7-6 in her second-round match.
