Wastewater Systems Overflowing in Several Regions Outside Edmonton Due to Rainfall
Officials warned the system could keep overflowing as up to 110 millimetres of rain fell and more precipitation was forecast.
On Sunday, Edmonton and Central Alberta issued emergency alerts after heavy rainfall overwhelmed wastewater systems, prompting officials to urge residents to limit indoor water use immediately.
Environment Canada reported up to 110 millimetres of rain fell by Sunday evening, with an additional 40 millimetres expected by Monday as weather specialist Kyle Brittain warned of an all-time June monthly rainfall record.
Authorities advised residents to limit laundry and dishwasher use to reduce system load, while Shield Foundation Repair president Todd Ivanchenko recommends homeowners inspect sump pumps and ensure downspouts direct water away from homes.
The City of Beaumont reported localized flooding and dislodged manhole covers, warning that sewer backups will increase if wastewater systems continue operating at capacity.
Brittain warned the ground cannot absorb further moisture, increasing the risk of future flooding, while noting wet conditions will likely bring an early mosquito season with "the mosquitoes are going to be coming for everybody soon.
