Dubai airport shutdown affects thousands of UK passengers
The flight was diverted after an Iranian drone strike caused a fire at Dubai airport, grounding flights and delaying hundreds of passengers for 11 hours onboard.
- On Monday, Emirates flight EK24, operating from Edinburgh, was forced to return after reaching the Egyptian mainland, landing around 06:49 after departing Sunday at 21:26.
- An Iranian drone struck a fuel tank near Dubai International Airport, starting a fire, and Dubai International Airport suspended operations as a precaution at around 5.34am local time on Monday; Dubai Civil Defence teams contained the blaze with no injuries reported.
- FlightRadar24 data show 65 planes were rerouted to 34 airports across Europe, Asia and Africa, while six Emirates flights from UK airports were forced to return and FlightAware tracked the EK24 route covering 4,872 miles.
